Wine Is Wisconsin is a new professional wine competition hosted by The University of Wisconsin Madison Department of Fermentation Science.


  • To provide feedback to Wisconsin winemakers, grape growers, and fruit growers to aid them in improving the quality of Wisconsin wines
  • To help provide promotional opportunities for Wisconsin wineries
  • To increase consumer awareness of Wisconsin wines produced from Wisconsin specialty crops
  • To encourage the growing of Wisconsin grown grapes, fruit, honey and applicable specialty crops

Wines will be judged blind by a panel of experienced judges.  Judges will initially taste individual wines from each category and then confer with members of their panel to award medals.  Each panel will be comprised of judges from different areas of expertise.  Judges may be university enologists, wine writers, experienced wine makers, wine retailers, and sommeliers.  Efforts will be made to ensure entrants receive feedback from a diverse judging panel.  Wines exhibiting significant and clear quality issues may be removed from judging.

Final Awards will be announced on August 8, 2017
